The Atlanta Braves have signed infielder Tyler Greene to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Gwinnett, according to a team announcement. To make room for Greene, the team released infielder Blake DeWitt.

Greene, who turned 30 on Saturday, was released by the White Sox on Tuesday after hitting .222 with 1 HR and 3 RBI in 22 major league games and .240 with 3 HR and 27 RBI in 56 games with Triple-A Charlotte. He was originally signed to provide infield depth for the White Sox at the major league level, but his early season struggles forced the team to designate him for assignment and outright him to the minors in June.
In five major league seasons with the Cardinals (2009-2012), Astros (2012) and White Sox (2013), Greene is a lifetime .224 hitter with 17 HR and 61 RBI. Due to the Braves' lack of depth in the middle infield, the Georgia Institute of Technology graduate may be considered for a callup once rosters expand on September 1st.
As MLB.com's Mark Bowman recently reported, the Braves are actively looking for middle infield help on the waiver wire due to injuries to Dan Uggla and Tyler Pastornicky, who is lost for the rest of the season with a torn ACL. It is unlikely that Greene will be the team's final middle infield addition before the August 31st waiver deadline, and players they could target include Elliot Johnson and Ryan Roberts, who were both recently designated for assignment.
DeWitt, 27, has missed most of the season with a lower back injury after signing with Atlanta in December. The former Dodger and Cub appeared in four major league games at the beginning of the season, and was 1-for-4 with a double in that stretch. He also appeared in two games for Gwinnett, and was 2-for-6 with a strikeout.
