Braves trade rumors: 'Good chance' of another trade

Atlanta picked up Scott Downs before the non-waiver trade deadline but could still add a couple pieces during the waiver period.

The Braves were quiet around the non-waiver trade deadline but could still address remaining needs according to Carroll Rogers of The Atlanta-Journal Constitution:

The Braves could still add a backup infielder and left-handed bat for the bench in a waiver deal in August to fill a void left from the season-ending shoulder injury to Ramiro Pena. But general manager Frank Wren said they’d like to use the next several weeks to evaluate their needs.

Atlanta was able to add Scott Downs after looking for left-handed relievers throughout July, but Wren suggests they could still add another piece after they get a better sense of where they're at:

"I think there’s a good chance (of another trade), once we have a better sense, get guys healthy, get the team functioning the way we see it functioning going forward - that’s short of other injuries," Wren said. "I think we’ll probably have some other activity, but all in all we’re pretty happy. The club is playing as well as we’ve played all year long. There’re a lot of positives."

Rogers reports that the Braves were considering acquiring a starter after Tim Hudson went down with a season-ending broken ankle, but the market had few top-tier options and the asking price in prospects was too high for a starter like Peavy.

For now, they're waiting to see how Brandon Beachy progresses from Tommy John surgery and how Reed Johnson recovers (if at all) from Achilles tendonitis. Jordan Schafer and B.J. Upton are both coming back from injury soon, with Upton starting minor league rehab Wednesday and Schafer due to begin this weekend.
