Angels place Erick Aybar, Jason Vargas on revocable trade waivers

Although the Los Angeles Angels didn't sell as much as some expected in advance of the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline, they may still be looking to move some pieces.

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, the Halos placed shortstop Erick Aybar and left-hander Jason Vargas on revocable trade waivers on Monday, and will find out if they cleared or were claimed on Wednesday.

Aybar, who signed a four-year, $35 million extension last winter, was aggressively shopped at the deadline along with second baseman Howie Kendrick, who came close to being dealt to the Dodgers.

The Cardinals were among the teams who discussed the possibility of acquiring Aybar in July, but ultimately decided that the Angels' asking price was too high at the time.

St. Louis may place a claim on the 29-year old, but the chances of the Angels parting with him before the August 31st waiver trade deadline are considered slim. Aybar, who is hitting .282 with 4 HR and 42 RBI in 100 games on the season, seems like an ideal candidate to be dealt in the offseason.

Vargas, who is a free agent after the season, is the more likely of the pair to be dealt. Although he was battling injury as the trade deadline passed, teams like the Orioles showed interest in acquiring him for the stretch run. Baltimore instead opted to deal for Bud Norris, meaning that their interest in Vargas is probably limited at this time. The southpaw is 6-5 with a 3.92 ERA, 6.1 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9 in 16 starts on the season, and has been average in two starts since coming off the disabled list in mid-August.
