The Nationals activated right-hander Ross Ohlendorf off the DL and optioned lefty reliever Ian Krol to AAA Syracuse.
The 22-year old Krol has been somewhat of a revelation since he was called up in early June from AA Harrisburg. Krol was the "player to be named late" in the trade for Michael Morse and was a surprise call-up when the Nationals underwent a bullpen overhaul. In his time, he a 3.24 ERA with 20 strikeouts over 27 games.
"He’s got a great future," Nationals manager Davey Johnson said. "He’s gonna be back in 10 days with the expanded rosters. I hate to miss him because he’s still learning up here. But he’s got a heck of a future."
Ohlendorf will replace rookie Taylor Jordan in the rotation, who was shut down on Friday. Ohlendorf has been on the DL since Aug. 1 with right shoulder inflammation.
Johnson said he wasn't completely comfortable with the current bullpen situation.
"I'm not real comfortable with it," Johnson admitted, "but it's the best thing for right now. We've got some other things with some players who need to get some playing time and make some judgements on them."
