The Atlanta Braves have acquired right-hander Freddy Garcia from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for cash considerations, according to an announcement from the team. The Braves assigned Garcia to Triple-A Gwinnett, but may give him a chance to pitch in the majors once rosters expand on September 1st.
After signing a minor league deal with the Orioles following his release from the Padres during spring training, Garcia has struggled in eleven appearances (ten starts) with the Orioles this season, posting a 3-5 record and 5.77 ERA in 53 innings of work. He has been excellent in thirteen starts with Triple-A Norfolk, and has gone 8-3 with a 2.84 ERA, 6.7 K/9 and 1.6 BB/9 in 53 innings.
Due to injury concerns surrounding starter Brandon Beachy, Garcia may head to the majors immediately to help eat innings for the playoff-bound Braves in the last month of the season. He is not currently a 40-man roster player, but it is unlikely that the Braves would add him for the final week of the minor league season without the intention of adding him to their major league roster.
Garcia has spent fifteen seasons in the majors with the Mariners (1999-2004), White Sox (2004-2006, 2009-2010), Phillies (2007), Tigers (2008), Yankees (2011-2012) and Orioles (2013). In 370 career appearances (354 starts), he has a career record of 155-106 with a 4.18 ERA, 1.307 WHIP, 6.4 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9.
