Diamondbacks designate Jason Kubel for assignment

The Diamondbacks designated outfielder Jason Kubel for assignment in order to make room for David Holmberg, who was called up from Double-A to make a start Tuesday night.

Players that are designated for assignment can be traded (although they still need to clear waivers), accept a minor league assignment or granted an outright release and become a free agent within 10-days.

The 31-year old former Minnesota Twin is hitting .220/.288/.324 with five home runs and 32 RBI in 89 games this seasons. Kubel had a big year in 2012, hitting 30 home runs, 30 doubles and 90 RBI, but his struggles have led to him losing significant playing time to Geraldo Parra, Adam Eaton and AJ Pollock.

Kubel fits in better as a designated hitter than he does as an everyday outfielder and will likely be a cheap option for an AL team to fil the DH spot.

The nine-year veteran was signed by Arizona as a free agent in December of 2011.

"This was probably going to be my last month here anyways, most likely, even if I stayed," Kubel told Arizona Central. "Now I get a chance to hopefully help somebody out and keep playing.
