The Toronto Blue Jays have been the biggest disappointment in baseball this year.
Their biggest disappointment is now out for the year, for better or worse.
The Blue Jays right-hander Josh Johnson will not pitch again in 2013 due to a strained forearm according to a report from Gregor Chisholm and Evan Peaslee of MLB.com. Johnson will not require surgery on his injury.
Johnson, who has not pitched since August 6, visited with specialist Dr. James Andrews, who confirmed the initial diagnosis and told Johnson that surgery would not be necessary. The former Miami Marlin missed time earlier this season due to inflammation in his tricep, which likely contributed to his velocity drop.
The 30-year old righty ends the season with a 6.20 ERA in 16 starts, a performance that will not help in free agency this winter.
Toronto likely won't make a $14M qualifying offer to Johnson, who will likely chase a one-year, incentive-laden deal. With all of Johnson's injury issues, he will be a risk to any team that signs him.
The Blue Jays acquired Johnson in a deal with the Miami Marlins that also landed the team José Reyes, Mark Buehrle, John Buck (who was flipped to the Mets) and Emilio Bonifacio. Johnson was expected to be part of a strong rotation led by RA Dickey, but the team underperformed and is currently in last place in the AL East.
