Phillies sign Cuban RHP Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez

After attracting a lot of attention earlier this summer, Cuban righty Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez officially signed with the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies won the sweepstakes about a month ago with a six-year, $48M offer, but after issues emerged with the righty's elbow on his throwing arm during the physicals, the contract was in jeopardy and was never formally signed.

According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the team and Gonzalez agreed to a revised three-year, $12M deal.

The deal is substantially less than the initial offer agreed upon, but the elbow is a huge issue for any pitcher. If Gonzalez does remain healthy, the deal has the potential to be a massive bargain for the Phillies. The contract has a vesting/club option for 2017 that could push the contract to four years.

The 26-year old projects as a mid-rotation starting pitcher who needs a little polishing in the minor leagues. Some of Gonzalez's critics believe that he is at best a major league reliever. Scouts say Gonzalez has a mid-90's fastball, a change-up, a curveball and a forkball.

"We are very pleased to have come to an agreement with Miguel," Phillies GM Ruben Amaro said in a statement. "He is someone our scouts have followed for several years and in our most recent observations of him he showed tremendous stuff. We are hopeful he will pitch out of our starting rotation for 2014 and beyond."
