Indians designate Mark Reynolds for assignment

Rob Carr

The Indians designated 1B/3B/DH and strikeout king Mark Reynolds for assignment, according to an announcement from the team. They now have 10 days to trade, release or outright Reynolds to the minors.

The 30-year-old Reynolds is hitting .215 with 15, 48 RBI and a .307 OBP. Reynolds is struggling against left handed pitching this year with just a .745 OPS. He is very limited defensively and his struggles offensively have made him expendable for a team contending for a Wild Card berth. Reynolds has started in just eight of the last 21 games.

Reynolds will likely catch on with another team due to his power potential. Jim Bowden of ESPN and SiriusXM is reporting that the Orioles have interest in reacquiring Reynolds if they can secure trade waivers on him.

Reynolds signed a one-year, $6M contract in December with the Indians after hitting 60 homers with Baltimore the past two seasons.

The Indians recalled reliever Preston Guilmet from Triple-A Columbus to take Reynolds' roster spot. This is Guilmet's second stint with the Indians this season.
