Diamondbacks acquire Matt Langwell from Indians

The Arizona Diamondbacks have acquired right-handed pitcher Matt Langwell from the Cleveland Indians as the player to be named later in Friday's Jason Kubel trade, according to a team announcement. With the trade now complete, it amounts to a one-for-one Kubel-for-Langwell swap, with the Indians also receiving cash considerations to cover the majority of the money remaining on Kubel's contract.

Langwell, 27, was Cleveland's eleventh round pick in the 2008 draft, and spent six seasons in the minors before being called up to the majors in early June.

He appeared in five games with the Tribe on the season, posting a 1-0 record with a 5.06 ERA, 10.1 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 in 5.1 innings of work. He fared much better in 42 appearances with Triple-A Columbus, posting a 3-4 record with a 2.24 ERA in 60.1 innings.

Langwell was ranked by IndiansBaseballInsider.com as the team's 52nd best prospect prior to the season. He is widely regarded as a fringe prospect, but his solid performance at Triple-A this season and high strikeout rate (8.9 K/9 for his minor league career) could make him a valuable piece for the D-Backs in the future. Langwell is under team control through the 2018 season.
