Dodgers, Guerrero halt negotiations

The Los Angeles Dodgers have reportedly dropped out of the Alexander Guerrero sweepstakes, writes FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.

The Dodgers had reportedly agreed to a five year contract worth $32 million with the Cuban infielder last week, however, the deal was never finalized due to issues involving Guerrero's then-agent Rudy Santin, and now it appears that Guerrero will be signing elsewhere.

The 26 year old second baseman is now under the advisement of Scott Boras, who is calling Guerrero's market "wide open."

Guerrero, who stands at just 5-foot-11, is an offensive minded second baseman who some believe could hit 20+ home runs per year from the keystone. After defecting from Cuba earlier this year, Guerrero established residence in Haiti before being officially cleared to sign with major league teams on September 6th.

CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman has also reported that the Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, Cincinnati Reds, San Francisco Giants, and Texas Rangers have all shown interest in Guerrero.

All of the aforementioned fits are intriguing, as they each have a viable second base option already under contract for the 2014 season. The Braves have Dan Uggla who has been nothing short of disappointing this season, but has hit 21 home runs and is under contract for the next two seasons. The Red Sox and Reds each have All-Star caliber second basemen in Dustin Pedroia and Brandon Phillips. The Reds could conceivably play Guerrero at shortstop, where he would likely be a well below average defensive option at the position. The Red Sox have plenty of depth in their middle infield even with starting shortstop Stephen Drew's contract coming off the books at the end of the season. It appears Xander Bogaerts has all but locked up the starting shortstop job for 2014, making a Guerrero-Red Sox match seem unlikely.

Just as curiously, the Rangers have a plethora of middle infielders, with Jurickson Profar, Elvis Andrus, and Ian Kinsler all capable of playing at a high level. It is likely that the Rangers will deal one of those players for help at other positions this offseason, making it doubtful that they would solve their jam only to go out and recreate it.

Of the above teams, the Giants make the most sense as a potential suitor. Marco Scutaro has been excellent this season, and is locked up through 2015, but he is nearly 38 years old, making it difficult to imagine that he is an above average option at the position even a year from now.

Wherever Guerrero goes, he will receive plenty of attention, as Cuban phenoms like Yasiel Puig and Jose Fernandez, have led expactations for Cuban ballplayers entering the MLB to be higher than ever before.
