Padres sign Brandon Morrow to one-year, $2.5 million deal

The Padres have agreed to sign right-hander Brandon Morrow to a one-year deal that includes $2.5 million in guaranteed money, according to Corey Brock of MLB.com. The deal includes incentives that could push its total value to $7.5 million if Morrow is a starter (based on games started), and $3.5 million if he is a reliever (based on relief appearances), according to a source.

Morrow, 30, has struggled with injuries over the last few seasons, making only sixteen starts and 23 total appearances for the Blue Jays over the last two seasons. He has struggled to ERAs of 5.63 and 5.67 in those two seasons, but the Padres hope that he can return to the form that led him to a 10-7 record and 2.96 ERA in 21 starts in 2012.

With Morrow in tow, the Padres now have a rotation of Andrew Cashner, Ian Kennedy, Tyson Ross, Morrow, and Odrisamer Despaigne, while Robbie Erlin is thought to be in the mix as well. The team has been linked to a few starters on the free agent market this winter, and is thought to be working on a deal with Josh Johnson, who missed all of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

In eight major league seasons with the Mariners (2007-2009) and Blue Jays (2010-2014), Morrow is the owner of a lifetime 42-43 record and 4.28 ERA in 231 appearances (108 starts).
