Padres acquire Derek Norris from Athletics

The Padres continue their aggressiveness with the addition of Norris.

The Padres have acquired catcher Derek Norris, right-hander Seth Streich and an international signing slot in exchange for minor-league pitchers Jesse Hahn and R.J. Alvarez, according to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News and Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan.

The acquisition of Norris is the latest in a series of aggressive moves for the Padres, who have also acquired Matt Kemp and Wil Myers in recent days. The team seems to be stocking up on offensive pieces, with Norris joining new acquisition Ryan Hanigan as San Diego's new catching tandem in place of Yasmani Grandal and Rene Rivera, who are being traded to the Dodgers and Rays, respectively.

Norris, 25, hit .270/.361/.403 with ten home runs and 55 RBI, being named to the AL All-Star team along with six of his teammates in July. The Athletics have now traded five of their All-Stars from last season (Norris, Yoenis Cespedes, Jeff Samardzija, Brandon Moss and Josh Donaldson), and only have lefties Sean Doolittle and Sean Kazmir left from that group.

Streich, 23, was the Athletics' sixth round pick in the 2012 draft and was recently ranked by MLB.com as the team's tenth best prospect. The right-hander spent his season with High-A Stockton, posting a 9-16 record and 3.16 ERA in 22 starts.

Hahn, 25, was originally acquired by San Diego from the Rays last offseason, and made twelve starts for the Padres in 2014. He was 7-4 with a 3.07 ERA in 73.1 innings at the major-league level, and is likely to join the Athletics' major-league rotation next year.

Alvarez, 23, also made his major-league debut this season, allowing only one earned run in eight innings of work. He will be a reliever at the major-league level after being acquired from the Angels in the Huston Street trade last summer.

As a whole, the trade represents a continuation of two surprising philosophies on the west coast this winter, as the Padres are aggressively buying while the Athletics sell off their assets in an effort to get younger. Both teams are expected to continue dealing as the offseason rolls along, with the Padres likely trading from their outfield surplus and the Athletics continuing their fire-sale.
