Indians sign Aaron Harang to minor league deal

The Cleveland Indians have signed right-hander Aaron Harang to a minor league deal that includes an invitation to spring training, according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Harang is already in camp with the Indians, and the deal is pending review of medicals.

Harang, who turns 36 in May, will likely join Carlos Carrasco, Trevor Bauer, Josh Tomlin and fellow non-roster invitee Shaun Marcum in competition for the Indians' fifth starter job during spring training. He joins a long list of notable non-roster invitees for the Indians this spring, along with infielders Bryan LaHair, Jason Giambi and Elliot Johnson, outfielders Nyjer Morgan and Jeff Francoeur, catcher Matt Treanor and Marcum, Kyle Davies, Scott Atchison, David Aardsma and Matt Capps for pitchers.

In 26 starts with the Mariners and Mets last season, Harang posted a 5-12 record and 5.40 ERA in 143.1 innings of work. For his twelve-year major league career with the Athletics (2002-2003), Reds (2003-2010), Padres (2011), Dodgers (2012), Mariners (2013) and Mets (2013), he has a lifetime 110-116 record and 4.28 ERA. His best season came in 2007, when he finished fourth in voting for the NL Cy Young award after posting a 16-6 record and 3.73 ERA in 34 starts for Cincinnati.
