The Milwaukee Brewers are expected to discuss a long-term contract extension with shortstop Jean Segura during spring training, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. The team made him an offer during spring training last season, but the two sides "haven't really" had discussions about a deal since the end of last season.
Segura, who turns 24 next month, hit .294 with 12 HR, 49 RBI and 44 stolen bases last season, his first full season in the major leagues. He was named to the NL All-Star team, and is currently under Brewers' control for the next five seasons. In 191 career major league games over the last two seasons, Segura is a career .287 hitter with 12 HR and 63 RBI.
While the team is likely to explore a longterm extension with Segura, the same can't be said about starter Yovani Gallardo. Sources indicate that there have not been discussions about an extension for Gallardo this winter, and that there is no current plan to discuss one during spring training.
