Braves acquire Zach Stewart from White Sox

The former top prospect will join Braves' camp as starting depth.

The Atlanta Braves have acquired right-hander Zach Stewart from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for cash considerations, according to Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune. Stewart, who was not on Chicago's 40-man roster, will join the Braves' camp in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. as a non-roster player.

Stewart, 27, was formerly ranked as the top prospect in the Blue Jays system after the 2009 season before being traded to the White Sox along with Jason Frasor for Edwin Jackson and Mark Teahen at the 2011 trade deadline. He then spent some time in the Red Sox organization after being acquired in the 2012 Kevin Youkilis trade, and has been property of four different organizations over the last four seasons.

With Kris Medlen going down with an apparent arm injury in yesterday's spring training game, the Braves are likely to be on the lookout for starting depth as they prepare for what could be an extended absence. Stewart, who last saw major league action in 2012, is likely to be one of many depth options that Atlanta adds before the beginning of the season.

In 28 starts with Triple-A Charlotte last season, Stewart was 6-14 with a 4.25 ERA in 167.1 innings pitched. In 33 major league games (14 starts) with the Blue Jays (2011), White Sox (2011-2012) and Red Sox (2012), he is the owner of a lifetime 3-10 record and 6.82 ERA in 103 major league innings.
