The Houston Astros are currently inquiring to teams about trading for a first baseman, according to ESPN.com's Jayson Stark. Stark lists Tyler Moore (Nationals), John Mayberry Jr. (Phillies) and Mike Carp (Red Sox) as names that the Astros have asked about, but mentions that each is an unlikely fit.
One scout mentioned that Moore has looked "really impressive" during spring training, in which he has hit .308 with 1 HR and 6 RBI in 15 games. Moore is currently slated to be the Nationals' backup behind Adam Laroche, so the team likely considers him expendable if the Astros are interested.
According to sources, the Astros were on the lookout for first basemen throughout the offseason, prioritizing right-handed hitters "with pop". Just speculation here, but the team could look at Ryan Lavarnway, who is being shopped by the Red Sox and could be converted from catcher to first base.
The Astros had some interest in Ike Davis this winter, according to reports, so they may re-visit trade talks with the Mets now that they are shopping Davis once again. Lucas Duda, who also may be dealt by New York, is also a possibility for Houston if the price is right.
Houston currently has Jesus Guzman and Chris Carter to man first base, with top prospect Jonathan Singleton likely to be ready within the next couple seasons, so their pursuit of a first baseman looks to be a quest for a luxury piece.
