Pirates, Diamondbacks discussing Didi Gregorius trade

The D-Backs may be interested in left-hander Jeff Locke in trade talks.

The Arizona Diamondbacks seem committed to Chris Owings at shortstop, meaning Didi Gregorius is available on the trade market. According to Jon Morosi of FOXSports.com, the Pirates have been engaged in trade talks centering around Gregorius, in hopes of upgrading the shortstop position that is currently manned by Jordy Mercer.

The Pirates are not the only team interested in Gregorius, according to CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman, who also links the Reds, Tigers, Yankees and Mets to the 24-year old shortstop. The Mets have been thought of as a favorite to acquire him, but other teams could step up their efforts as the season draws closer.

The D-Backs have been seeking young pitching or catching in trade talks with teams for Gregorius, so they could look at some young pitching prospects in talks with Pittsburgh. Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review speculates that left-hander Jeff Locke could be a fit for the D-Backs, so a one-for-one Locke-for-Gregorius swap should not be considered out of the question.
