The Atlanta Braves have agreed to sign right-hander Aaron Harang to a one-year, major league contract, as first reported by Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com. Harang was granted his release earlier in the day by the Indians in order to pursue major league opportunities after being informed that he would not make the major league roster.
Harang will likely join the Braves' major league rotation out of the gate, replacing Freddy Garcia, who was released today as well. Atlanta lost Kris Medlen and Brandon Beachy to season-ending elbow injuries and will be missing Mike Minor and Ervin Santana for the beginning of the season, so the addition of Harang is a move that will provide depth immediately at the major league level.
Harang, who turns 36 in May, was 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA in four games during spring training after signing a minor league deal with Cleveland in mid-February. He lost the rotation job in Cleveland to Josh Tomlin or Carlos Carrasco, and will instead head to Atlanta, likely joining the Braves' rotation.
With Harang off the market, teams looking for rotation help will have to turn to the likes of Garcia, Erik Bedard or Scott Baker, who were recently granted their releases as well.
