As teams cleared 40-man roster space for new additions as the season got underway, almost twenty players were designates for assignment and became available to the rest of the league.
Eight of those situations were resolved today, with four players being claimed off waivers and four players being outrighted to the minor leagues after clearing waivers.
Here's a rundown:
Dodgers claim Carlos Triunfel from Mariners
The Dodgers claimed infielder Carlos Triunfel off waivers from the Mariners, according to a team announcement. The 24-year old was subsequently optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque, and will begin his fourth season at the highest minor league level. Triunfel struggled in 8 spring training games with Seattle, hitting only .167 with 3 RBI in 22 at-bats. He has appeared in 27 major league games over the past two seasons, hitting .167 with 5 RBI in that span. He can play second base, shortstop and third base, providing valuable infield depth for the Dodgers at Triple-A.
Angels claim Michael Brady off waivers from Marlins
The Angels claimed right-handed reliever Michael Brady off waivers from the Marlins, according to a baseball source. Brady will be assigned to Double-A Arkansas. Brady, a 27-year old Orange County product, has spent four seasons in the minors with the Marlins, posting a lifetime 12-8 record and 2.18 ERA in 174 appearances. In 49 appearances last season with Double-A Jacksonville, Brady was 2-2 with a 1.53 ERA, 9.3 K/9 and 1.5 BB/9 in 53 innings. He will provide minor league depth to start the year, but could get a chance to join the major league bullpen as the season progresses if he performs well.
Padres claim Bobby LaFromboise off waivers from Mariners
The Padres claimed left-hander Bobby LaFromboise off waivers from the Mariners and optioned him to Triple-A El Paso, as first reported by Corey Brock of MLB.com. The 27-year old appeared in three games during spring training with Seattle, surrendering one earned runs on two hits in 2.2 innings. He has ten games of major league experience, with a career 0-1 record and 5.91 ERA in 10.2 innings last season. LaFromboise will provide left-handed bullpen depth for the Padres at El Paso after a 2013 season in which he was 6-0 with a 3.39 ERA in 45 relief appearances at Triple-A Tacoma.
Braves claim Pedro Beato off waivers from Reds
The Braves claimed right-handed reliever Pedro Beato off waivers from the Reds, as David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution first reported. Unlike the other three players who were claimed on Wednesday, Beato will join the major league squad immediately. In 81 relief appearances over three seasons with the Mets (2011-2012) and Red Sox (2012-2013), Beato has a lifetime 4-2 record and 2.55 ERA. The 27-year old spent spring training with the Reds, posting a 3.00 ERA in nine games after being claimed from the Red Sox in October.
In addition, Brian Bogusevic (Marlins), Carlos Peguero (Royals), Xavier Avery (Mariners) and Adam Rosales (Rangers) cleared waivers and were sent on outright assignments to their team's Triple-A clubs. None of them are able to refuse the assignments and elect free agency.
