The Miami Marlins have agreed to sign right-handed pitcher Micah Owings to a minor league contract that is pending a physical, according to an industry source. Owings will first report to extended spring training in Jupiter before joining the team's Triple-A affiliate in New Orleans later in the season.
Owings, 31, is going back to working strictly as a pitcher this season after experimenting as an outfielder last year in the Brewers and Nationals organizations. He hit .252 with 9 HR and 34 RBI in 85 games split between the two organizations, but will return to pitching for 2014.
In parts of six major league seasons with the Diamondbacks (2007-2008, 2011), Reds (2009-2010) and Padres (2012), Owings is the owner of a lifetime 32-33 record and 4.86 ERA in 138 career appearances (68 starts). His best season came in 2011, when he was 8-0 with a 3.57 ERA in 37 appearances (4 starts) with Arizona.
