Rougned Odor promotion: Rangers call up top prospect

Jurickson Profar will be back soon, but Odor will get a chance to show the Rangers that he's ready for the majors now.

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

The Texas Rangers have announced that they will promote top prospect Rougned Odor.

Since you're probably wondering, it's pronounced ROOG-ned o-DOOR, but most of his teammates just call him "Roogie."

The 20-year-old second baseman will skip Triple-A altogether, at least for the moment. The Rangers are waiting on Opening Day second baseman Jurickson Profar to return from the disabled list after being sidelined with a shoulder injury.

Odor was hitting .279/.314/.450 with six home runs and six stolen bases in 32 games for the Frisco Rough Riders. Sickels points out that Odor could use some work on defense, but calls him an "elite prospect." He will be joined in the majors by fellow 20-year-old Double-A prospect Luis Sardinas. Sardinas was hitting .253/.278/.333 in 21 games. He is considered more of a defense-first shortstop with a solid contact profile as a hitter, but will bring little to the table in terms of power.

Coming into the 2014 season, Minor League Ball's John Sickels ranked Odor first and Sardinas ninth in the Rangers' system with B+ and B- grades respectively.
