Marlins trade rumors: Miami could be buyers in spite of Jose Fernandez' injury

If Jose Fernandez hadn't undergone Tommy John surgery, the Marloins might very week be the best team in the National League East at the moment. Even without him, they're in the conversation. If the bottom doesn't fall out between now and the end of July, the Marlins could be buyers at the trade deadline. They could look to "stockpile their bullpen or add a veteran starter," according to the Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo.

It isn't likely that the team will target a big name pitcher that would command a considerable prospects. They have a plan in place that should see them field a competitive team for a significant stretch, and that plan depends heavily on keeping young, inexpensive players under team control.

The Cubs might still extend Jeff Samardzija, but he could be the biggest name moved this summer. However, it would be something of a surprise if the Marlins made a push for him. Chicago is asking for a lot in return and Miami could have some trouble inking Samardzija to a long-term extension. Surrendering Andrew Heaney or another top minor leaguer for a year-and-a-half of the control over the Cubs' ace. The same goes for the Rays' David Price.

Bullpen pieces are always easier to add, and Miami could likely do so without giving up one of their valuable long-term pieces. They could choose to promote Heaney and add an impact reliever or two in an effort to improve without suffers any major setbacks in their plan.
