MLB mock draft 2014: The first round 3.0

The draft is only a few days away ...

USA TODAY Sports

Other than a few "What if?" Nick Gordon rumors, the prevailing opinion is that the Astros are going to pick high school lefty Brady Aiken. It makes sense. He's a southpaw that throws in the mid- to upper-90s and he has a curveball that has led some to compare him to Clayton Kershaw.

The Marlins could go with the high-ceiling bat of Alex Jackson at No. 2, but it might be hard for them to resist Carlos Rodon. Although he'd probably be well received anywhere, Rodon -- a Cuban-American -- would be immensely popular in Miami, and paired with Cuban ace Jose Fernandez, the Marlins could have a incredible one-two punch at the top of their rotation.

From there, the draft could go many different directions, and the selection of Louisiana State right hander Aaron Nola could be the pivot point. Some have him going as high as No. 4 overall to the Cubs, which would inevitably push one of the four premier prep players out of the top five.

A team could also surprise, as the Royals did last year, and make an underslot selection early in the draft in order to catch a falling prospect later in what is considered an extremely deep draft class.
