Royals trade rumors: Kansas City backing off on Jonny Gomes, Josh Willingham

The Royals seem less interested in the outfielders they were pursuing.

The Royals' pursuit of a right-handed power bat has made headlines for a few weeks, and they now seem to be narrowing down their choices. According to ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick, the team is no longer trying to acquire Josh Willingham (Twins) or Jonny Gomes (Red Sox), and is not interested in adding Justin Ruggiano (Cubs) or Chris Denorfia (Padres).

Kansas City has shown interest in Rangers' outfielder Alex Rios, but their interest has waned a bit, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, who adds that Texas is willing to pick up salary in a deal involving Rios. The Royals also looked at Marlon Byrd, but ended their pursuit of him once it was found out that they were one of the four teams on his limited no-trade clause.

At this point, the Royals seem disenchanted with the most of the most popular names in the right-handed hitters market and look like they will have to be creative if they want to add a bat before the deadline.
