Athletics, Twins swap Sam Fuld for Tommy Milone

The teams each filled a need in the one-for-one deal.

The Athletics have acquired outfielder Sam Fuld from the Twins for left-hander Tommy Milone, as first reported by Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com and Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com.

Fuld, 32, began the year with Oakland before being designated for assignment and claimed off waivers by the Twins in late April. He has hit .274/.370/.354 with a home run and 17 RBI in 53 games for Minnesota, and will join the newly-acquired Jonny Gomes in a platoon in left field. The A's have been looking for outfield upgrades over the last week, and ended up subtracting Yoenis Cespedes in favor of the Fuld-Gomes platoon.

Milone, 27, was displaced from the Athletics' rotation due to the team's trades for Jeff Samardzija, Jason Hammel and Jon Lester, and recently asked to be traded. The southpaw is 6-3 with a 3.55 ERA in 16 starts for the A's this season and has also seen time at Triple-A Sacramento, but he will now head to the Twins and provide a much-needed rotation arm that is under control through the 2017 season.
