Yankees acquire Brandon McCarthy from Diamondbacks

The Yankees have acquired starter Brandon McCarthy from the Diamondbacks, according to two major league sources. As Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News first reported, left-hander Vidal Nuno is headed to Arizona in the deal.

Arizona will pay $2.05M of the roughly $4.2M remaining on McCarthy's contract, with the Yankees picking up the other $2.15M as well as a $1M bonus that the right-hander will receive as a result of being traded.

McCarthy, who turns 31 tomorrow, joins the Yankees as a replacement for CC Sabathia, who will likely miss the rest of the season due to injury. The Yanks have been relying on Nuno, Chase Whitley and David Phelps following the injuries to Sabathia, Ivan Nova and Michael Pineda, and were known to be looking for pitching on the trade market.

McCarthy is 3-10 with a 5.01 ERA in 18 starts this season, but has shown stretches of promise and will look to pitch better in a competitive environment. He will become a free agent after the season, so he hopes to regain the form that helped him become one of the best pitchers in the American League with the Athletics in 2011 and 2012.

Nuno, 26, has struggled this season, posting a 2-5 record and 5.42 ERA in 17 games (14 starts). He will likely take McCarthy's spot in the D-Backs' rotation, and could benefit from a change of scenery after being dealt to Arizona.
