Blue Jays claim Nolan Reimold off waivers from Orioles

The Toronto Blue Jays have claimed outfielder Nolan Reimold off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles, according to MASN.com's Roch Kubatko. The news was first tweeted by Reimold's cousin, Seamus Doyle.

Reimold, 30, was recently designated for assignment by the Orioles once they were unable to get anything for him in a trade. He will join the Jays as a fourth outfielder behind Melky Cabrera, Colby Rasmus and Jose Bautista. Reimold is the team' second waiver claim in as many days, joining Cole Gillespie, who will also serve as a backup outfielder.

As we reported last week, the Jays have been on the lookout for backup outfield help due to the continued struggles of Brad Glenn and Darin Mastroianni. They were looking at Jeff Francoeur, who is hitting well at Triple-A for the Padres and has a rolling opt out in his contract, but it appears that the additions of Reimold and Gillespie could make a move for Francoeur unlikely.

Reimold has yet to make his season debut due to a neck injury, and has only appeared in 56 games over the last two seasons with Baltimore. For his career, he is a lifetime .252 hitter with 41 HR and 126 RBI in 286 major league games over five seasons. His best season came when he was a rookie in 2009, when he hit .279 with 15 HR and 45 RBI in 104 games.

The addition of Reimold represents a no-risk addition for the Jays, who could still make a move for outfield help with almost a month to go before the trade deadline. If he can return to the form of his 2009 self, he may be a nice little addition as the Jays make their push towards the playoffs.
