Mariners trade rumors: Seattle on the verge of making a deal?

Are the Mariners about to make a move? Let's speculate.

Jim Rogash

After the Athletics and Angels struck early in the trade market by making deals over the weekend, word around the league is that the Mariners could be moving closer to making a move. One industry source indicates that the M's are doing some "roster shuffling" today, indicating that a trade could be on the horizon.

Names that have been mentioned as potential trade candidates include relievers Dom Leone, Dan Farquhar and Brandon Maurer, according to sources.

One possibility for a Mariners' deal involves the Rays, who recently sent their top scouts to watch the Mariners' system, according to a source. This is just my speculation here -- but pursuits of Rays' trade targets David Price and Ben Zobrist would make sense for the M's, who currently sit eight games behind the AL West-leading Athletics and two games ahead of the Blue Jays for the second AL wild-card spot. Tampa has been known to be looking for bullpen help, so they might line up with the Mariners on a deal smaller than one that could include Price or Zobrist.

A deal with the Rays would make sense, as Seattle has been pursuing Price in trade talks since last offseason and might be willing to make a big move to compete with the Angels and A's, who have shown aggressiveness on the trade market so far.
