Tyler Skaggs to undergo Tommy John surgery

Angels' left-hander Tyler Skaggs will miss the remainder of the season and likely all of next season due to Tommy John surgery, as first reported by Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register. Skaggs has been sidelined since July 31 with forearm discomfort, and will now hit the shelf for the foreseeable future as the Angels make a push towards the playoffs.

Skaggs had been solid in his first full major league season, posting a 5-5 record and 4.30 ERA in 18 starts as the Angels' fourth starter after being acquired in an offseason trade involving Mark Trumbo. The southpaw's absence leaves the Angels a bit light on pitching depth, with options like Matt Shoemaker and Hector Santiago at the back end of the rotation behind Jered Weaver, Garrett Richards and the struggling C.J. Wilson.

Because of their lack of rotation depth, the Angels are actively scouring the waiver wire for upgrades, as general manager Jerry Dipoto told Fletcher last week. Teams who have fallen out of contention may be willing to part with some arms in order to get at least something in return, so the Angels may make some moves similar to the Dodgers' additions of Roberto Hernandez and Kevin Correia over the last few days.
