Royals claim Jayson Nix off waivers from Pirates

The Royals made a depth move on Friday, claiming infielder Jayson Nix off waivers from the Pirates, as Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star first reported. Nix was exposed to waivers after being designated for assignment by Pittsburgh earlier in the week.

Nix moves to his fourth organization of the season, following stints with the Rays, Phillies and Pirates so far this year. He has hit .133/.188/.173 in 34 major league games while hitting .272/.340/.408 in 55 games at Triple-A, seeing time at second base, third base and right field in the big leagues.

Nix will serve as infield depth for the Royals once rosters expand on Monday, joining Christian Colon as backups behind starters Omar Infante, Alcides Escobar and Mike Moustakas for the stretch run. Nix does not appear to factor into the Royals' playoff plans, as they will likely only carry one backup infielder if they make the postseason.

In seven major league seasons with the Rockies (2008), White Sox (2009-2010), Indians (2010), Blue Jays (2011), Yankees (2012-2013), Phillies (2014) and Pirates (2014), Nix is a lifetime .214/.284/.347 hitter with 38 home runs and 129 RBI.
