Ron Washington has resigned as manager of the Texas Rangers, citing an "off-the-field personal matter" as the reason for his departure.
Washington, 62, was in his eighth season managing the Rangers. He led the team to three straight playoff appearances, including back-to-back American League pennants in 2010 and 2011. Texas has hobbled to a last-place 53-87 record this season, but Washington says the team's play is not a factor in his decision.
In a statement, Washington said his decision to resign "in no way related to the disappointing performance of the team this season."
