The Athletics are involved in negotiations with free-agent left-hander Rich Hill, according to multiple industry sources. One rival executive whose team has interest in Hill said Tuesday night that he believed the Athletics were one of the favorites to sign Hill.

Hill is close to signing with a team, according to a source, though it is unknown if the Athletics are that club. Many teams, including the Padres and Rays, have reached out with interest in signing the southpaw.

Hill is expected to sign a 1- or 2-year major-league deal after pitching well down the stretch for the Red Sox, who signed him out of the Atlantic League over the summer. Hill made four starts with Boston, allowing only five earned runs in 29 innings in his first time starting in the majors since 2009.

Hill is a veteran of eleven major-league seasons with the Cubs (2005-08), Orioles (2009), Red Sox (2010-12, 2015), Indians (2013), Angels (2014) and Yankees (2014).
