The Tigers have agreed to terms on a 1-year deal with free-agent infielder Mike Aviles, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney. The deal will pay $2 million in guaranteed salary and includes an additional $300K in incentives, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com.
Aviles, 34, will serve in a utility role for Detroit, who had interest in Sean Rodriguez before he re-signed with the Pirates. He appeared at six different positions with the Indians in 2015, and will likely provide depth in both the infield and outfield for the Tigers.
Aviles has spent eight seasons in the majors, appearing with the Royals (2008-2011), Red Sox (2011-2012), and Indians (2013-2015). He is a lifetime .265/.297/.385 hitter with 58 home runs and 292 RBI in 810 career games.
Aviles is the latest free-agent addition for the Tigers, who have also signed Jordan Zimmermann, Mike Pelfrey and Mark Lowe while trading for Francisco Rodriguez this offseason. For a complete look at where each free agent has signed, check out our free-agent tracker.
