Nate Schierholtz opts out of contract with Rangers

As Spring Training comes to an end, teams are cutting their rosters down in preparation for Opening Day. The Angels released Matt Lindstrom, the Cubs released Felix Doubront, and Nate Schierholtz opted out of his contract with the Rangers on Saturday.

Texas signed Schierholtz to a minor league deal, and he posted nine hits in 34 at-bats with the Rangers this spring. Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News was among the first to note Schierholtz was told he would not make the major league club on Saturday.

Schierholtz, 31, posted a .265 average to complement three RBIs in 13 games. He also scored four runs.

Schierholtz spent the 2014 season with both the Nationals and Cubs, posting a .195/.243/.309 batting line in 122 games. He also added seven home runs and 37 RBIs.

Although he did not have a great spring, Schierholtz may be attractive to teams seeking a left-handed pinch hitter. He is a career .253/.302/.405 hitter with 228 RBIs to his name.

Angels release Matt Lindstrom

Lindstrom's contract with Los Angeles "had an out," according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register. He can now pursue an opportunity elsewhere, but The Los Angeles Times' Mike DiGiovanna notes the veteran right-hander was surprised by the club's decision.

Although the Angels' bullpen appears to be set, Lindstrom was likely surprised because he has pitched with a major league club in each of the last eight seasons. Lindstrom, 35, posted a 5.03 ERA and 4.37 FIP in 34.0 innings with the White Sox in 2014. He also saved six games for Chicago.

In 5.2 innings of Cactus League play, Lindstrom posted an 11.12 ERA. He missed some time last season as a result of an ankle injury and may not find another opportunity quickly.

Cubs release Felix Doubront

Doubront was hoping to win a spot in Chicago's rotation, and after failing to do so was granted his release, according to NBC Sports' D.J. Short. He allowed nine runs and 17 hits in seven innings of Cactus League play.

Doubront posted a 5.54 ERA and 5.13 FIP in 79.2 innings in 2014. He made 14 starts and seven relief appearances, and despite the fact that his velocity was inconsistent last season, he is just 27 and may draw interest from teams looking for pitching depth before Opening Day.
