Jerry Dipoto ultimatum 'backfired'

Jerry Dipoto appears to be out as the GM of the Angels, and it might have been his own fault.

News is still coming in from multiple sources, and Jerry Crasnick has reported that not only is Jerry Dipoto out as the general manager of the Angels, but also that it likely was his own doing.

It's unclear what the details of this ultimatum were, but if Dipoto challenged Arte Moreno's allegiance to his manager Mike Scioscia, that was a poor move on his part. Scioscia is the longest tenured manager in baseball, and with the trust of his players, it was likely an easy decision to make. Removing Scioscia, and by association his coaching staff would have completely torn the team apart, and potentially caused irreversible damage.

While we're just getting word of this now, apparently more than a few players were aware that changes were coming even before their game tonight.

All of this is happening at the worst time imaginable for the Angels, as they clearly need upgrades at multiple positions, and are now without a general manager as we head into July. They'll need to act swiftly to assign responsibility to people already within the organization, or to hire a new GM immediately. An internal hire would make the most logical sense, as that person would already have a working knowledge of the Angels farm system.
