Pirates trade rumors: Pittsburgh 'wants to get rid of' Pedro Alvarez

New, comments

The Pirates are offering Alvarez to "everybody" in advance of the trade deadline.

The Pirates are trying "to get rid of" Pedro Alvarez and are "offering him to everybody", according to a general manager who spoke with Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan. It is unclear if Pittsburgh is close to a deal involving Alvarez at this point, though they seem very willing to move him.

The news about Alvarez comes on the heels of reports that the Pirates are trying to upgrade at first base while looking for left-side infield options in the wake of injuries to Jordy Mercer and Josh Harrison. The team has been linked to Ben Zobrist, Clint Barmes and Cliff Pennington in recent reports, but could also look to acquire available first baseman Mike Napoli or Mitch Moreland from their respective clubs. Moreland would be an upgrade over Alvarez, while Napoli would not.

Alvarez, 28, has struggled all season, posting a .231/.299/.414 line with twelve home runs this season. The former All-Star has consistently hit for power without hitting for much average throughout his career, and is under team control through next season. With a lack of available first baseman out there on the market, the Bucs may be able to find a suitor to take on Alvarez and the roughly $2 million that he is owed for the remainder of the season.
