The Angels have acquired infielder Conor Gillaspie from the White Sox in exchange for cash considerations, according to a team announcement. Gillaspie was designated for assignment by Chicago last weekend.
Gillaspie will provide a short-term replacement for third baseman David Freese, who will be out for a few weeks with a fractured finger. The 28-year old has the ability to play both third base and first base, and will likely split time with Kyle Kubitza at the hot corner in Freese's absence.
In 173 at-bats for the White Sox this year, Gillaspie posted a .237/.276/.364 line with three homers and 15 RBI. He is a veteran of parts of six major-league seasons with the Giants (2008, 2011-2012) and White Sox (2013-2015), and has posted a lifetime .258/.312/.393 line in that time. He was the Giants' first-round pick (37th overall) in the 2008 draft and made his major-league debut just three months after being selected, playing just 24 games in the minors.
