Dodgers trade rumors: Los Angeles will not trade Yasiel Puig

The Dodgers have a surplus of outfielders but have told Puig he will not be dealt.

Update -- The Dodgers have told Yasiel Puig he will not be dealt, according to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman.

Original -- With a surplus in their outfield, the Los Angeles Dodgers could trade right fielder Yasiel Puig before the July 31 trade deadline, according to FOX Sports' Jon Morosi.

Puig has played just 50 games this season, hitting .259/.337/.422 with five home runs in 185 at bats. However, the 24-year-old is on a contract that pays him less than $25 million through 2018.

Morosi mentions the Phillies and Mets as possible destinations for Puig, as both teams have needs for outfielders in both the short and long term and have the starting pitching the Dodgers are after. Los Angeles including Puig in a trade for Phillies ace Cole Hamels would certainly raise eyebrows and grab headlines.

That said, this is likely a lot of speculation on the part of Morosi. Yes, the Dodgers do have an over-crowded outfield, but they are much more likely to trade someone older and more expensive, like 33-year-olds Carl Crawford and Andre Ethier.

Ethier in particular could be of interest to teams as he is having a bounce-back season, hitting .281/.366/.466 with 10 home runs in 88 games after hitting just four home runs in 341 at bats in 2014. The drawback to a team acquiring Ethier is that he is owed $18 million in 2016 and $17.5 million in 2017 with a team option in his contract for 2018 that would require at least a $2.5 million buyout.

The lack of an expensive contract is what makes Puig attractive in a trade, both for the team acquiring him and for the Dodgers, who would likely get a greater return for him than one of their more veteran outfielders. Being young, cost-effective and talented is also what would motivate the Dodgers to keep Puig, which is why the odds of him going anywhere before the trade deadline are quite slim.
