UPDATE: Zobrist has in fact been traded to the Royals. Full story here.

ORIGINAL: The Athletics are deep in talks to trade Ben Zobrist and something could happen soon, according to a report from Jane Lee of MLB.com. While Zobrist's destination is not yet known, industry speculation is that the Royals will be in on Zobrist to the end and are one of the favorites to acquire him.

Zobrist has been linked to multiple clubs in rumors this summer, with the Pirates, Nationals, Yankees, Cubs and Mets being most frequently mentioned. Kansas City is known to be looking for offensive help after acquiring Johnny Cueto for three left-handed pitching prospects over the weekend, and may be looking at Zobrist as one of its top targets.

When Zobrist is traded, he will be the third Athletics' veteran to be dealt this month, joining lefty Scott Kazmir (Astros) and reliever Tyler Clippard (Mets). The 34-year old will become a free agent after the year and is a draw to teams looking for versatility and a solid bat (.268/.354/.447 with six homers in 67 games this year).
