Rangers designate Neftali Feliz for assignment

New, comment

The reliever is likely to be traded in the next ten days.

The Rangers made a surprising move late Friday night, designating reliever Neftali Feliz for assignment in order to make room for Matt Harrison on the 40-man roster. Anthony Andro of FOX Sports Southwest was the first to report the news.

Feliz, 27, was recently activated from the disabled list after being sidelined since late May with an abscess on right side. He has posted a 5.09 ERA in seventeen appearances this season, regressing after coming back strong from injury last year with a 1.99 ERA and thirteen saves in 30 appearances for the club.

Feliz was an All-Star and the AL Rookie of the Year in 2010, when he posted a 2.73 ERA while saving 40 games in 59 appearances for the Rangers on the season. He was a consistent contributor before struggling with injuries since tearing his UCL in 2012, and has made only 61 appearances over the past four seasons.

With many teams throughout the game (such as the Blue Jays and Tigers) looking for bullpen help on the trade market, Feliz will likely find a new home in the near future as the Rangers look to work out a trade within the next ten days. The reliever is under club control through next season, and is earning an affordable $4.13 million in his third year of arbitration this season.
