Giants acquire Mike Leake from Reds

The Giants missed out on David Price and Cole Hamels, and turned to Mike Leake instead.

The Giants have acquired right-hander Mike Leake from the Reds, a source has confirmed to our Chris Cotillo. Minor-leaguers Keury Mella and Adam Duvall are heading to Cincinnati. Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com was first on the deal.

The Giants rotation has been subpar this season, and currently rank 23rd in MLB by fWAR. The Giants clearly needed an upgrade, and after being denied in the David Price and Cole Hamels sweepstakes, they finally completed a trade that will position Leake alongside Madison Bumgarner, Chris Heston, Jake Peavy, Matt Cain and Tim Hudson in a crowded rotation mix.

In 136.2 innings this season, Leake has pitched to the tune of a 5.93 K/9, a 2.24 BB/9, an ERA of 3.56, and an FIP of 3.88. However in his last eight starts, he's been fantastic, and posted an ERA of 2.33, and an FIP of 2.43. Leake's home park will now be AT&T park, which is undoubtedly a much friendlier environment for a pitcher to make half of his starts in than Great American Ball Park.

As for the players going to Cincinnati, Mella is the headliner. According to MLB.com, he's the Giants top ranked prospect. In 81.2 innings this season at High-A, Mella has posted a K/9 of 9.15, a BB/9 of 2.87, an ERA of 3.31, and an FIP of 3.72. He's just 21 years old, and has posted great numbers throughout his minor league career.

Duvall has strictly been in AAA this season, and in 433 plate appearances, has slash line of .279/.323/.548, with an an ISO of .269, a wOBA of .371, and a wRC+ of 124. He's on the older end of the prospect spectrum, as he's currently 26, and will turn 27 in September. With Brandon Belt and Matt Duffy on the corners for the Giants, there was no room for Duvall in the team's future plans. He was ranked as the 25th-best prospect in the Giants' system.
