Astros, Padres in talks on significant deal involving Tyson Ross, Craig Kimbrel

The sides may be closing in on a deal, according to sources.

The Padres and Astros are having what appear to be serious discussions involving Tyson Ross and Craig Kimbrel, according to multiple industry sources. Jake Marisnick and Mark Appel are believed to be involved in the talks as well.

It is not a foregone conclusion that Ross and Kimbrel end up with the Astros, though they are one of the most interested teams. The Cubs love Ross and the Yankees are reportedly being aggressive in talks for Kimbrel.

It is currently unclear how far along the sides are on a deal, though one possibility is that Ross and Kimbrel would go to Houston in exchange for Marisnick, Appel and other prospects if a deal was completed. Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports first reported the talks.

Houston has been busy on the trade market so far, adding Scott Kazmir, Carlos Gomez and Mike Fiers within a week. San Diego has not yet made a trade in July, but is expected to aggressively sell before tomorrow's 4 PM non-waiver trade deadline.

Ross and Kimbrel have both been linked to the Astros in trade talks, and would make sense for an aggressive Houston ballclub. If Ross is acquired, the Astros may look to move an arm like Vincent Velasquez or Lance McCullers in the deal as well. Marisnick is available due to the acquisition of Gomez, and would likely fit into a Padres' depth chart that may lose Will Venable and Justin Upton to deadline deals.
