Yankees injury update: Mark Teixeira done for season

The Yankees received awful news about their injured first baseman today.

Yesterday, Mark Teixeira said that he was optimistic he'd be able to play for the Yankees again this season; but today that hope was extinguished.

Unfortunately this means that the Yankees will have to finish the stretch run without their best offensive player. In 462 plate appearances, Teixeira hit 31 home runs, and posted a slash line of .255/.357/.548. His ISO of .293 ranks fourth in MLB, while his wOBA and wRC+ are 11th.

With Teixeira out for the remainder of 2015, Greg Bird is now set to finish the year as the starting first baseman. In 94 PA's, Bird has hit .241/.319/.458 with an ISO of .217, a wOBA of .335, and a wRC+ OF 112.

The Yankees are running out of time to retake the lead in the AL East, and they start a crucial three-game series against the Blue Jays today. New York is 1.5 games behind Toronto as of this writing, and are set to face David Price in the opening matchup. Marcus Stroman will also take the hill in what will be his first major league start of the year. Teixiera was a large part of the Yankees' success this season, and it's going to be difficult for them to make the playoffs without him.
