Padres sign Carlos Villanueva to 1-year, $1.5 million deal

The Padres have agreed to a 1-year, $1.5 million deal with right-hander Carlos Villanueva, according to a report from Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports. The deal also likely includes incentives based on performance, though specifics are unknown.

Villanueva, 32, spent last year with the Cardinals, posting a solid 2.95 ERA in 61 relief innings for St. Louis. He will likely work as a long reliever for San Diego, joining Odrisamer Despaigne, Cory Mazzoni, Kevin Quackenbush, Nick Vincent and Brandon Maurer as right-handed bullpen options for the Padres.

Villanueva is a veteran of ten major-league seasons with the Brewers (2006-10), Blue Jays (2011-12), Cubs (2013-14) and Cardinals (2015), and has posted a lifetime 49-53 record and 4.18 ERA in 425 appearances (76 starts). He will also likely be considered to make spot starts for a Padres team that may look to trade starters Tyson Ross, James Shields and Andrew Cashner at some point next season.
