Diamondbacks trade rumors: Arizona trying to move Aaron Hill

Hill could be traded this week.

Arizona is still trying to trade veteran second baseman Aaron Hill, according to MLB Network Insider Jon Heyman.

Why this rumor makes sense

The Diamondbacks could have interest in Howie Kendrick, but the only way for the club to create a spot for him would be to move Hill.

Although Hill is the only second baseman reportedly being shopped, Brandon Drury and Chris Owings could also be moved. Moving Owings or Drury could result in a greater package in return, but it seems it is only Hill who is on the block.

Earlier this off-season, the Reds and Diamondbacks reportedly discussed a deal involving Brandon Phillips and Hill. The talks never progressed, but the Diamondbacks still appear open trading Hill.

If Arizona is hoping to improve its offense heading into 2016, signing Kendrick would likely be beneficial.

The market for second baseman has not yet fully developed, but Kendrick is thought to be one of the more productive available options. Over 117 games with the Dodgers last season, Kendrick batted .295/.336/.409 to complement nine home runs and 54 RBIs.

Why this rumor does not make sense

Arizona has a desire to move Hill, but as Heyman points out, it will not be easy considering the names still available on the market.

Kendrick, Ian Desmond and Jimmy Rollins are all still available, and the market for infielders has yet to fully develop. Hill is also relatively expensive (he is due $12 million in 2016) and is coming off of a pair of down years offensively.

If the Diamondbacks are truly as open to trading Hill as it seems, the club might be forced to pay at least a portion of his remaining contract.

Once several other free agent infielders sign, there is a chance the Diamondbacks consider moving Hill again. But until then, a deal would likely not be valuable for Arizona.

Likeliness overall: 3/10

The Diamondbacks want to move Hill, but there are too many other established options available.
