Indians sign Josh Tomlin to 2-year, $5.5 million extension

The Indians have signed right-hander Josh Tomlin to a 2-year, $5.5 million extension, according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. The deal includes a $3 million club option for 2018, and can be worth up to $12 million over three seasons if all incentives are met.

Tomlin was slated to become a free agent after next season, so the extension extends Cleveland's control over him for two full years. He will earn $2.25 million in 2016 before being paid $2.5 million in 2017.

Tomlin, 31, made just 10 starts last season for the Indians, posting a solid 3.02 ERA while also spending significant time in the minors. He is currently projected to be back-end rotation option for the Indians, and could see an increased role if the Tribe trade someone like Carlos Carrasco, Danny Salazar or Trevor Bauer in the near future.

Tomlin has spent his entire career with Cleveland, posting a career 36-30 record and 4.65 ERA in 95 appearances (80 starts) since making his major-league debut in 2010.
