Yankees sign Carlos Corporan to minor-league deal

The catcher will provide depth for the Yankees behind Brian McCann, Austin Romine and Gary Sanchez.

The Yankees have signed catcher Carlos Corporan to a minor-league deal, according to a major-league source. Corporan will likely receive a major-league spring training invite.

Corporan, 32, elected free agency in October after spending last season with the Rangers. He appeared in 33 games for Texas, hitting .178/.244/.299 with three home runs after being acquired from Houston in January.

New York has been searching for catching depth all winter after trading John Ryan Murphy to Minnesota, having been interested in Tyler Flowers as an option behind Brian McCann, Gary Sanchez and Austin Romine. Corporan will provide the Yankees with a third option, likely spending some time in Triple-A as a potential injury replacement.

Corporan is a veteran of six major-league seasons with the Brewers (2009), Astros (2011-14) and Yankees (2015), hitting .218/.280/.342 with 20 home runs in 232 career games. He is a switch-hitter who was originally drafted by Milwaukee in the 12th round of the 2003 draft.
