The Braves have agreed to a 2-year, $11.5 million deal with infielder Sean Rodriguez, according to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal.
The Pirates, Blue Jays and Dodgers were also among the six teams interested in Rodriguez, according to SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo.
Rodriguez, 31, had a solid season with the Pirates in 2016, batting .270/.349/.510 with 18 home runs and 56 RBIs over 140 games. He spent time as an outfielder and at first base, second base and shortstop.
Rodriguez will likely receive playing time at several positions with the Braves. Adonis Garcia is expected to be the starter at third base, but Rodriguez can take Nick Markakis’ spot in the outfield against left-handed hitters.
Atlanta could also use Rodriguez as a right-handed option at second base, where Jace Peterson will almost certainly receive the majority of the playing time.
The Braves have been active early this winter, signing free agent starters R.A. Dickey and Bartolo Colon earlier this month.
