Free agent reliever Brad Ziegler, who is drawing interest from the Marlins, Nationals, Rockies, Diamondbacks, Mets, Yankees and a mystery team, is close to a decision, according to FanRag Sports’ Jon Heyman.
Ziegler could sign with a new team by the end of the day, according to SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo, and is seeking a three-year deal, per Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan.
The Marlins signed free agent reliever Janichi Tazawa to a two-year, $12 million deal on Thursday night as the relief market continues to evolve. With Mark Melancon, Aroldis Chapman, Kenley Jansen and now Tazawa no longer available, Ziegler could be the next back-end arm to sign.
Ziegler, 37, had a dominant 2016 campaign, pitching to a 2.25 ERA and 3.10 FIP over a combined 68.0 innings. He pitched notably well for the Red Sox in the second half, posting a 1.52 ERA and 2.71 FIP over 29.2 innings.
